Who it is for
Girls from under one year old through Miss/Mrs (18 to 27), plus an Elegant Miss division for 28 and up. Boys compete from birth through 9. Divisions include Pee Wee (4 to 6), Little Miss (7 to 10), Pre-Teen (11 to 13) and Teen (14 to 17).
What is judged
Sunburst says it has no interview. Contestants are judged on beauty, overall appearance and personality, with center-stage presentation only and no scored modeling.
On makeup, Sunburst's pageant page says no makeup for babies 3 and under, little to none for ages 4 to 6, and age-appropriate makeup from 7 to 27. It lists a $55 pageant fee for its local beauty pageants. Sunburst does not use the words natural or glitz for itself, so we do not label it either way.
How locals feed state and national
Sunburst runs local pageants through the year. Its FAQ says winning any award at a local covers the $250 state beauty entry fee. The North Carolina and South Carolina state final is one event in Charlotte, listed on both states' Sunburst pages. State finalists qualify for Sunburst Internationals in Orlando each July.
